Beautifully Banal

Graphic Design

The Type Director's Club invited designers to design a series of posters based on newspaper classifieds. Every designer had full freedom, so there are a lot of different styles in the series. The ones on the right are my favorites (by Tina Roth Eisenberg and Alex Trochut) since they simple add a layer of expression to the original text based on an interpretation of the classified. This is in contrast to some of the other posters in the series that are mostly cool-looking illustrations without a visible link to the original content. Make sure to check out the project website for the full set.

The other thing I like about this series is that it makes such a great statement about the work of designers. It shows that a line of text can be presented very bland or, with some creativity, in an incredibly expressive, eye-catching way.

Graphic Design The work from the US based graphic design agency Laboratory is very energetic and clean. The typography is modern and sharp, the colors are fresh and the designs rely on basic visual elements and principles instead of images as is so often the case. See the full entry for more examples of their print work.
